Book Review

Kate Daniels is an urban fantasy series set in a magically altered world, specifically Atlanta. In this world, magic and technology clashes and cannot exist at the same time which has caused some weird side effects to not only buildings but also to humans, animals and other natural (or rather unnatural) phenomenon.

We are introduced to Kate, a powerful mercenary (although she doesn’t broadcast her abilities) who has a secret, her father is a god, Roland and she has spent her whole life hiding and learning how to defend herself in case her dad comes calling.

We follow her journey on building her tribe (collecting strays as she calls it), fight tough opponents (some of them gods including her father) to protect not just her loved ones but the whole of Atlanta.

She falls in love with Curran (who was my book boyfriend for a long time, he was just so yummy and such an alpha!), who is the Beast Lord of Atlanta shapeshifters. Each book follows a general theme; Kate is assigned a case (that seems trivial) and no one wants to investigate but it almost always ends up being a large, complicated problem that impacts the whole of Atlanta and at least one of the people she cares about.

We have vampires, we have shapeshifters, we have druids, we have witches, we have ancient gods and so much more! Ilona Andrews really delivers with these books and I can truthfully say I was sad when I turned the last page of book 10; I still miss that world and all of the adventures of Kate and Curran.

There were sad moments, happy moments and it was beautiful to see Kate’s journey; from thinking that she had to be isolated and separate from the rest of the world (emotionally and mentally) to seeing her blossom into a well rounded person, falling in love, creating connections and building her tribe. This book is really the epitome of that quote by Maya Angelou:

“Family isn’t always blood. It’s the people in your life who want you in theirs. The ones who accept you for who you are. The ones who would do anything to see you smile, and who love you no matter what.”

Special shoutout to the side characters who enhanced the stories, gave it depth and life: Derek, Julie, Aunt B, Andrea, Raphael and many more!

I will pretty much read any and everything that Ilona Andrews write; they are amazing story tellers and world builders with a very good mix of paranormal and romance. They have well rounded characters, ones that you root for and never one dimensional characters. Even the villains have depth to them!

Love this series, 10/10!
